Certification and Placement
Credentials from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) such as the Certified Coding Associate (CCA),
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and/or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P)
may be achieved by sitting for their exam. No school can provide this
certification. Designation as a CCA, CCS and/or CCS-P can only be achieved by national testing. We
believe this is a worthy pursuit and encourage our graduates toward that goal.
The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) provides certified credentials to medical coders in
physician offices, hospitals and outpatient centers. Being certified means the coder has passed a rigorous
examination, obtained 2 years of coding experience and stays updated with continuing education. The three
certifications through AAPC include CPC, CPC-H, and CPC-P. Our training is focused toward the goals of those who plan to work toward certification.
Medical coders have more options than many occupations. You may eventually choose to work from home
for yourself or as an employee of a medical billing service or hospital. Another option
would be to work outside your home in a hospital or for a medical billing service. Other
possibilities include working in a doctor's office or insurance company. If you are able
to keep your options open, you'll have more opportunities. On the other hand, if you limit
your availability to work, you may make less money. It's even possible to be so picky
about when and where you will work that you limit yourself out of work entirely. A little
bit of common sense goes a long way.
Do you want a challenging, interesting career where you will be compensated according to
your level of skills and how effectively you use them? This may be the right place for you
to invest in your future!
